Extravagant Signals: Volunteer Call Out

NEWS FLASH: Volunteering at Art Events Boosts Street Cred, Attractiveness, Jeopardy Scores and Social Responsibility Rating

Works by targeting so-called cool quotient with hyper-doses of niceness and relevance

Related Story: Apathy, Dejected Hipsterism and Lameness on the Wane as Vancouverites flock to Volunteer Opportunities

May 22, 2013, Vancouver -- Long-awaited studies linking volunteering with increased happiness, coolness and date-garnering ability have finally been released in Vancouver, British Columbia. Although the studies are not yet available to the public, Barbara Adler claims that the work conclusively demonstrates that people who volunteer at arts events are, in her words, “better”...

Hey Friends,

I’m writing to ask for help with the Extravagant Signals series that I am curating June 15-22. For seven nights, Gallery 1965 on Main St. will be overrun by an eclectic group of shows that features Juno-winning musicians, poetry champions, internationally touring tap dancers, accordion lovers and more. It all runs alongside an art show by local artist Oli K.

It’s a huge undertaking for myself and my co-organizers, which is why I’m asking for your help. Please take a look at the schedule, and see if any of the events strike your fancy. We’re hosting a wide-range of communities under this banner, so I feel confident that there will be something that speaks to you in this list. Social dance? Ukuleles? Poetry? It’s so niche it’s mainstream.

When you find a show you’re interested in, drop me a line at badler@badler.ca, and I’ll let you know how you can help. We’re all working on the love\beer\thanks economy: there will be lots to go around if you come on board.

We also need help getting the word out. If you’re on FB, you can help us by re-posting our event. If you go to school, work, play or otherwise frequent a place that has walls, consider meeting up with me for a high-five and a poster that you can use to make those walls look nicer.

Thank you so much for considering this call-out!

Excited little dance,

Barbara

Accordions Go Wild! Spring Break Tour Now!

Hello friends,

Spring is here! My parsley has sprouted! I saw a cherry tree under strong pressure to bloom! Floral prints and maxi dresses seem like a good idea!

The most urgent news is this:

Proud Animal is all set to stuff itself into a Mazda Protegee and galivant across the prairie ice plains for our Spring Break tour. Yes, Vancouver is finally looking attractive and somewhat blue-skyed. It makes sense that our angsty rock and roll seeking hearts are leaving it all behind in favor of -20, snow storms, and closed mountain passes! Rock on, Spring-time in the Prairies! You are so raw!

We're very excited to be sharing shows with our favorite act in the world: Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers. We've condensed the tour a bit to do this perfect spring fling with the foxes. Here are the dates:

As always, we are a small band packing a tiny vehicle across a big country. If you know anyone in the places we'll be playing, please send them our way. We'll return them in better condition than they came.

Vancouver friends, Barbara Adler (accordion! girl!) will be playing a very rare solo show on Wednesday, April 3rd at the Rickshaw Theatre. This is awesome, because she will be pushing herself to play solo accordion and keyboards. If you like Proud Animal's music, but are generally confused about what the words are about because the drums\electric guitar\beer-swilling patrons are too loud, this is the show for you. Come find out what songs like "Honey Badger", "Vancouver, I Love You, But..." and "Children of Divorce" are REALLY saying. PS. Loud electric guitar and drums are awesome. Undeniable.

Gavin Youngash and Ben Brown of Proud Animal joined Barbara Adler last week for a super fun songwriting workshop with the Grade 3's and 7's at Armstrong Elementary. We wrote a song about Archeopteryx (the first bird!) and a rap PSA about the joys of being weird! We had so much fun that we're putting together a workshop which we'll be bringing to more elementary schools next year. If you're a Grade 3-7 teacher and you think songwriting is an awesome way to learn about words, teamwork and sometimes dinosaurs (it is!), you can get in touch with me at proud@proudanimal.com, or look for more info soon at Barbara's website: www.badler.ca

Three weeks of tour with ReachOut Psychosis are coming up in April. We have new songs straining out of our pants! We'll be recording in April at the Ben Brown cabin. It is exciting to be busy and to be doing new things. Let's take a second and be impressed by Spring Time and new stuff: songs, lambs, grass, robins, parsley sprouts, maxi dresses, brief glimpses of blue sky

This is the news that I have. Thank you always for your eyes and ears. Now get thee to thine gardens and thine floral prints!

Accordions Gone Wild? Spring Break Tour

We are the most pleased to announce our upcoming Spring Break Tour: March 20-25. If you live in Western Canada, consider trading your faux cowboy hat, your micro bikini and your tanning regimen for a night of wild accordion and electric guitar rock.

Accordions Gone Wild?

“…ABSOLUTELY BUBBLING WITH JOY.” CBC MANITOBA

“...an incisive, relevant and entertaining rock band.” Verb Magazine, Saskatoon

If you think accordion music is your Great Uncle playing polkas, Proud Animal promises to take you to the squeezebox’s wild side.

Hailed as a “mature, inventive band” (The Georgia Straight), Proud Animal is an electric four-piece that promises to make you forget anything that polka has ever done to you. Their music mixes accordion and electric guitar riffs with inventive rhythms, catchy melodies and an unconventional blend of boy-girl harmonies that sometimes feature Patti Smith-style rock and roll shouting. Always eclectic, their shows span a wide range of song styles, including sweet-tempered anthems, brash rock outs and playfully sharp meditations on everything from astronomy to promiscuity.

March Western Canada Tour March 20-25
Proud Animal hi-tails it out of the province for BC's Spring Break. Exactly like 'Girls Gone Wild', minus everything you associate with that trashy spectacle.

  • March 17: Vancouver: Falconettis EARLY SHOW: 6:45-8:45 PM
  • March 20. Edmonton: The Black Dog Freehouse.
  • March 21. Edmonton. New City Compound.
  • March 22. Saskatoon: Vangeli's. With Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers
  • March 23. Winnipeg: Times Change. With Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers
  • March 24. Regina. The Artful Dodger.
  • March 25: Calgary: TBA

If you know someone who lives in these fine hamlets, please tell them we are coming their way. Small band, big country, gigantic love puddles.

Many thank yous,

Barbara + Proud Animal

Kamloops, Sweet Kamloops

Sweet Kamloopians!

We are coming your way tomorrow, and it is clearly the best news. We'll be playing a sweet little show at The Art We Are, Saturday, February 2nd. 8 PM. Here's the link to the Facebook Event for all the info.

Reasons this is excellent:

- we will play with big, fluffy hearts, because we really like Kamloops

- we really like Kamloops because Kamloops is excellent!

- Kamloops is excellent because it has the most character of any of the places in that general region of the Okanagan. In fact, we all know that the Kamloops is pretty much the Cariboo.

- The Cariboo rocks. Check out one of my favourite writers, Paul St. Pierre, for more info.

- We also love The Art We Are, we love the coffee place with the good espresso guy, we love The Noble Pig, we love our friend Ando, we love her dog, we love sage brush, sunshine on snow, and the satisfaction of having survived a mountain drive.

All very good reasons to join us. If you are not in Kamloops, you can also join us at the Side by Side Benefit performance, February 13th at the Cultch. Vancouver's finest contemporary dancers mash up with our favourite indie bands. Youth and pro dancers and musicians unite!

And if you are not in Vancouver, or in Kamloops, then you really have to join us when we do our quick Western escapade in March. Vancovuer to Winnipeg and back. More details soon, but for now, realize that it involves Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers. Yes!!

Love and chocolate,

Barbara

You Found Us

Hello Good Person,

Today, a kid at a high school show came up to us at the end, and told us that they were 'pleasantly surprised' by our music. We were better than the other bands they'd seen in their school. Is there a some kind of secret high school band circuit that we don't know about? Seriously! How is there a basis for comparison? Anyway, after the compliment, they told us that it was **impossible** to find us on google, because that lady with the animal website comes up first. Grrrr.

Well, here you are, smart human. You found our website. You recognized that a band's website probably would not be the one with photos of dogs; rather, the one with the music. Thank you for your persistence.

As your reward, here is a recent article in The Georgia Straight that talks about our EP, schools shows, and our upcoming show at the PuSh festival, with Harold Nix and Twin River.  It's two days away. It's this Saturday! We are the most excited. We hope to see you there.

Hearts and URLs,

Barbara

Going Away and Coming Home

Greetings, Proud People,

This is Barbara, writing another quick hello in preparation for another Proud Animal ReachOut Tour. This is our third tour of the year, and we are starting to feel like a fairly lean and mean touring machine. Performing at high schools doesn't exactly have the glamor and high kicks associated with playing rock clubs (and yes, we love glamor and high kicks), but it does feel like a great opportunity to tighten up our playing and "focus group" some of our songs on unsuspecting teens. It is a major point of pride to get a bunch of tired grade 11's to dance in their seats, even a little, when it's 9 AM, and you're under florescent lights. When we've been able to get a marginal wiggle out of teenagers with a song, it's usually meant that we're sitting on our newest dance hit for adults. Hurrah! I also have to say that I'm pretty proud of how fast the band can do a tech set-up and run cables now. With our ultra-organized and calm sound tech, Cherie Dysktera at the helm, we've become almost super-humanly efficient, by rock club standards. I know, I know-- strange things to brag about, but this is the stuff that we're learning.

Apart from ReachOut, we're not playing much in December. Our sweet regular drummer, Aaron Klassen is doing a mega tour of Europe with the terrifically punky and awesome band Hot Panda. We're stoked to hear his reviews of European pastries, beverages and nightlife. If he keeps it classy, we may even share his insights on croissants and babes here. Our fill-in drummer this month is a huge treat. We're playing with Skye Brooks (Fond of Tigers, Co Pilots, Veda Hille, and so much more). He is already providing a welcome insight into the good life, sharing stories about picking apples in Mission and tips on how to eat yeast-neutral foods on the road. And man, can he drum.

Last bit of news! Proud Animal is excited to announce that we will officially start Living the Dream in January. Gavin, James and I are going to live with band sommelier, Vinny Gibson. The fact that we are naming Vinny as our sommelier should give a hint that we're approaching the band live-in with a touch of class. We've found a beautiful space and are really excited to share music, food and laundry together. We've already been doing a lot of that at our current space, but Gavin and James are both excited that they will soon officially be living with a cat. Bam!

More shows in January, more projects, more songs. Excitement. For now, I leave you with a photo of Gavin, taken at the gig where we premiered our latest song: "The Fox and the Grapes." Written for a food sustainability event called Table Matters, it features somewhat smutty descriptions of junk food, wrapped up in references to both Aesop and Shakespeare. Oh-ho. No big deal.

It is tonight. It is tonight! Yes. Tonight.See you at Gallery 1965, 1965 Main St. 9:30 PM. Hearts and more hearts.

Cariboo Tour Down & Away We Go Again!

Aaron the hulk by Cherie DyksteraHey friendlies,

A quick hello and good bye before we head out on the road again. Last week, we went on our very first ReachOut tour of the year. We visited schools in the Cariboo, performing a couple of shows a day for a fun and grueling week. We are a lean and mean machine! We're leaving today for a Northern Okanagan tour, but before we go, I thought I'd tell you about a couple of shows:

1. Friday, November 2nd @ The Libra Room: We'll be doing three school shows in the valley and then hurtling back to the city to play the late set at Vancouver's most notorious jazz room. It won't be jazz. It will be super hot fire party time. And after three daytime shows, trust me that we will be warmed up.

2. Friday, November 7th @ Gallery 1965: Our EP Release Party with Oli K is nigh! We are so very excited for this. If you want to ensure an actual seat, you can buy tickets in advance on Eventbrite. Hurrah!

And finally, here are some pics from our Cariboo Tour, taken by our wonderful sound tech and photographer, Cherie Dykstera. If you want to keep in touch with us on the road, Like our FB page, and the ReachOut Tour FB page. We post contests and prizes for The Youth, everyone is more than welcome to access. Hurrah everlasting youth!

Let's Go!

Advance Tix for Proud Animal EP Launch!

Advance Tix for Proud Animal EP Launch and Art Show Available Online

Breaking News Update:

Lo' friends,

You can now buy your tickets to our EP Launch online and in advance.

Here is a brief Q & A on typical questions we receive for this type of scenario.

Q: "Why would I buy tickets in advance? You're not exactly Nickleback\The Jonas Brothers\Cats."

A: Thank you. We appreciate that you recognize that we are not any of those acts. While it's true that we're not selling out stadiums, it is completely possible that we will sell out Gallery 1965. We picked this venue because we wanted to give people a badass and unique experience: rock music and visual art by Oli K, in an intimate space that we can transform to our liking. We sometimes wish we lived in 1970's era NYC. Or maybe even Berlin as described by Erin Kendall. Your $10 in advance guarantees you a seat. *An actual seat*. That's a nice thing.

Q: "What's the deal with rock shows in an art gallery? Will there be beer?"

A: Yup. And if you get there between 7 and 9 pm for the free art reception, there will be cheese plates. Welcome to the giddy world of visual art.

Q: "I don't live in Vancouver. Leave me alone."

A: Where do you live? We might come there eventually on tour. Also, you can buy the album online on CD BABY and Itunes. We can pretend we're holding hands through space.

Q: "Will there be burlesque?"

A: No! Why would you even ask that? There will be no burlesque. But there will be something even more naked than burlesque, which, as we know, rarely gets totally naked. Listen, friends. We are still a pretty new band. We play with the big fat fire under our bums, that only comes with band debt, eagerness to prove, and a Sense of Insignificance in the Great Schemes of things. In the words of Bright Eyes, the Patron Saint of our dark moods: We are nothing! We are no one! It is now!

And yet, here is a typical comment we make to each other over our pots of lentil soup: "you know, we'll probably look back at these days as the best time of our lives." You know. Before the billions of dollars and fans turn us into cold shells of narcissistic humanity. Or whatever. The point is, EP Launch Number One is a big deal for a young band. Come be bright-eyed with us. Like, in the uplifting way, and not the emo way.

Okay. Hope that helps.

From the Church of Hyperbolic Sales Pitch,

Barbara, for Proud Animal

Vancouver EP Launch & Upcoming Shows!

Proud People!

Now is the time to get excited for the glorious parties that can only happen in the Fall. You're thinking: "How can this be? I only like parties that involve BBQs, Vancouver-style fake tans, and fruity drinks with twirly straws."

My friends, you are so wrong. The best parties involve art spaces, rain and the most dangerously hip fashions that the shoulder season demands. So grab your cardigans and your gumboots, and mark your calendar for the future: Friday, November 9th @ VIVO Arts (1965 Main St). We're throwing a party to launch our EP into the world. Do you want to know the best news? We're teaming up with a great visual artist named Oli K. If summer in Vancouver is about Kits Beach, surely we must agree that November is about Main St. And what could be more fantastically Main st. than a night of music, bum shaking, paintings and sculpture. Damn! Let us put away our action films and our beach novels, and celebrate the fact that we are smart! We love culture, long sleeves, and friendship!

And, since you are all so impatient, here are some shows you can join us for in the meantime:

Thursday, September 13th: "The Big Squeeze" at The Accordion Noir Festival (The Cobalt)
Sunday, September 16th: "Mistakes I've Lived Through" at the Accordion Noir Festival (The Anza Club)
Sunday, September 16th: Barbara Adler hosts "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Underdog Instrument Grudge Match" (The Anza Club)

That is it for now. Enjoy your last wheat beers. Personally, I cannot wait for the stouts. Wahoo!

Barbara Says Stuff

Proud in bedExciting News. Well, for Barbara

Just in case you missed our homecoming parade, I’m stoked to announce that Proud Animal has returned from our first cross-Canada tour.

I’ve been telling everyone that this tour was the most economically disastrous and personally rewarding tour I’ve ever been on. I stand by that. We played some loud music to people who weren’t expecting it, chummed down as a band through hard times and legitimately fell in love with Winnipeg. We even slept in a field!

Maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise then, that this particular tour gave me a lot of time to ponder the “big questions.” And by “big questions,” I don’t mean “Are you there God?”, or “When is Peak Oil?” Although we definitely did end up talking a lot more about God than I expected on a “rock tour” (thank you, Mennonites of Winnipeg :) ), and I did read a book about Peak Oil (in case you’re wondering, it’s soon and we’re hooped)...

Read on to hear what these BIG QUESTIONS are...

Good Bye Winnipeg! Hello Episode 2 of Leave the Radio On!

Dear Winnipeg,

We loved you so. We're heading out in mere minutes to play our last show of this tour, at the gorgeous Falcon Trails Resort. I'll be writing very shortly with some thoughts on the amazingness of our stint at the Fringe (we learned stuff). But for now, here's another podcast for you guys. Enjoy!

Proud Animal in
Leave the Radio On: Episode 2

"In the days of My Youth"

Recorded LIVE @ The MTYP as part of the WInnipeg Fringe Festival

Reflections and memories of childhood.

This is the first set where things started to feel good for us. Still a little creaky, but some sweet moments.

Featuring a story full of lies about my childhood, a song about clumsy waltzing, and an epic rock odyssey about camping with a three year old. We also play our anthem to the Beastie Boys, "Do What You Loved When You Were 12 Years Old".

Our Winnipal for the day was Terra, the Singing Math Teacher, who can be heard on the last two tracks.

Our homework song was our attempt at Lady Gaga meets Proud Animal, on the theme: "If it were Summer All the Time."

The lyrics were written on the car ride in to play at the Brandon Folk Festival. The song was learned on the car ride back to Winnipeg to play our noon show at the Fringe. I think with some work, it might one day be a keeper. If we re-write 99% of the words.

"Burning on my shoulders
bring that lotion over
rub there, me
you love it"

'Nuff said.

Enjoy, and remember. This is a live show. Bad things happen to good people. Good things happen by accident. It's all recorded through one condenser mic at the back.

Thank you to Chris Coyne for our sound! Thank you to Tonya Jone Miller of 'Threads' for laughing at our jokes.

All the Dates and Also Chic-Ness!

Summer Dates & New Raiment For All

Hello Everyone,

Happy Solstice! The longest day wasn't just for more hours on the computer! It was also for gelato and watching my cat chase a piece of grass up a tree. Ah, the Seasons!

This is my last update before Proud Animal hits the road running this Friday. There's a lot to say.

Full Tour Dates Are Finally Up. I'm posting them below, but click on the link for the FB page.

This is an earnest plea. If you're a friend or a buddy in art, please let your friends know across Canada that we're coming. Canada is a really crappy place to tour, geography-wise. There's this whole issue of the Canadian Shield. It's hard to make it work. But as science has shown, there are lovely, fantastic-faced people all over the place, and we want to see them. We're packing so much gear into a Mazda Protegee. At the very least, tell your friends that the clown car is coming. We will explode out of it in a tornado of amps, instruments, and sun chip wrappers. It will be mesmerizing...

We Are Grateful!

Hey Everyone,

We're in full tour prep mode, getting ready to pitch our hopes and our smallest duffel bags into a Mazda Protegee. We think this would be a good time to thank a couple of fantastic people. Have you noticed our awesome web re-design? Are you seeing these photos? You might be wondering how a new band has managed to have such killer looking photos. Admit it. A band that's been around since January would usually have mom-photos in the living room. Or, best case scenario, we'd be doing the classic "we're bored" look in front of some local brick wall. It's time to introduce our secret weapons. We're lucky enough to be friends with a world-class sports and action photographer named Tony Hoare.

X-Canada Tour Dates!

 Hello Friends,

The last dates are filtering in for Proud Animal's first tour across the great wide expanse of Canada. We're doing a two-week stint at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival with our variety show, "Leave the Radio On". Our shows building up to Winnipeg will feature material from our fringe show, as well as some amazing pairings with great local friends...Read on for full dates!

Our CD, Into Your Hands!

Promises! We keep Promises!

Friends, as we have said, our digital release is today. Lo' and behold. Get your hands on our new EP on CD Baby, right here.

We're on tour now (three shows today! holy cow!), so not many words here. But I'll have some snippets of preview tracks up here for you soon, and some words from the road.

We hope you enjoy our stuff! Yes! Exuberance!

Open Rehearsal Tomorrow Night!

Hey Vancouver Friends! Proud Animal is having an open rehearsal this Thursday (tomorrow night) at 10:00 pm. We're going to run through our set for the upcoming tour. Anyone interested in an hour of free music, contact me at proud(at)proudanimal.com and I will send details. It's in East Van. If you like Aaron William Chaster Klassen, James Meger, Gavin Youngash or Mike Young, this may be fun for you (they're playing).

Our History, Our Past

I just found this. The beginnings of the electric and ridiculous musical partnership that is now Proud Animal. The day I (Barbara) convinced Gavin to come and do "Beat It" with Fang at the Accordion Noire Festival. Watch how I try to tackle him off the stage. So ramshackle and awesome. Michael Jackson sings way too high.

New Website

Holy Smokes, my friends! The website is finally looking like Proud Animal! A big hurrah for Jordan Bent's art... Sly dogs, you have guessed it..

New Northern Dates

New Northern Dates!

Fans of the North! Admit it, you love the new CBC air drama, Arctic Air. Come on....And you probably are guessing that it will be cut following the enormous slashing to CBC's budget. Boo. So here is how you are going to get your fix of the Canadian North. Join Proud Animal for our dates in Chetwynd, Prince George and Smithers. We will be playing at 12 high schools across Northern BC with the ReachOut Psychosis tour.
